Almost a million people have been evacuated from their homes in the Philippines as Typhoon Goni, the most powerful storm this year, approaches.

Torrential rain and 215 kilometres per hour winds are expected to hit the main island of Luzon today passing over the capital Manila.

BBC News reports disaster response officials have warned to expect widespread damage.

Goni is the most powerful storm to hit the Philippines since Typhoon Haiyan killed more than 6,000 people in 2013.

This time, preparations have been made complicated by the Covid-19 virus, which has already caused 380,739 infections and led to 7,221 deaths in the Philippines.
