Police are investigating two reports where inmates were allegedly found with dried leaves believed to be marijuana yesterday.
The Assistant Commissioner of Police – Operations (ACP), Livai Driu, says the first report involves a 35-year-old inmate who was escorted to the Lami Health Centre by a Fiji Corrections officer for a dental check.
He says the officer noticed a person acting in a suspicious manner and shortly after, allegedly saw the suspect pick something along the corridor.
ACP Driu says upon questioning, the suspect voluntarily handed over several sachets of dried leaves believed to be marijuana wrapped in aluminium foil.
In the second report, ACP Driu says a Corrections officer, while on duty at the Naboro Prison Complex, found an item believed to have been thrown into the facility.
He says when a search was conducted on the five prisoners who were working outside, several sachets of dried leaves believed to be marijuana were allegedly found on a 29-year-old inmate.
All seized substances have been sent for analysis.
ACP Driu has acknowledged the Fiji Corrections Service for its continuous efforts of curbing drug-related activities as it contributes to the overall intent of reducing supply and harm.
He says there is overwhelming support towards efforts to tackle the illicit drug trade, and this should be a warning to those involved that they will get caught.
