Construction of the Tuatua gas-fired crematorium project began yesterday after a groundbreaking ceremony in Labasa and is expected to be completed within 16 weeks.
While officiating the groundbreaking ceremony, Minister for Multi-Ethnic Affairs and Sugar Industry, Charan Jeath Singh said the people of the Northern Division have been deprived of a good facility to farewell their loved ones.
Singh says it’s the coalition government's commitment towards inclusivity, and environmental sustainability, recognising and celebrating Fiji's diverse ethnic, religious and cultural landscape.
He says visits to cemeteries are mostly a somber affair however today's occasion is about ushering in a new beginning.
The Minister says that the completion of this new facility will have a gas-fired crematorium and a decent sitting arrangement for the mourners, and they have several planned projects in Lautoka, Ba, and Navua.
He says additionally, 4K Construction has been selected for the refurbishment of the Tuatua crematorium, and Weseng Consulting Limited is tasked with the Environmental Management Plan, as required by the Department of Environment.
Singh further says the Ministry is planning for the establishment of a 'Ghaat' facility in Labasa, which will enable families to offer final prayers to their deceased relatives.
