Tsunami siren test underway, no evacuation needed

The National Disaster Management Office has conducted a Tsunami siren test at 11am today in Suva, and no evacuation is needed.

The NDMO states that this exercise is part of the government’s continued commitment to improving its state of readiness for any tsunami event and advises people to not be alarmed, as this is a routine test to ensure the tsunami early warning system is operational.

There are a total of 13 sirens installed along the Suva foreshore, having an acoustic range of 1.2 kilometres.

The sirens are located at the Water Authority of Fiji, Kinoya, FINTEL Vatuwaqa, RFMF Training School in Vatuwaqa, USP Statham, USP Lower Campus, Veiuto Primary School, Government Training Centre in Nasese, iTaukei Trust Funds Board, SCC Civic Centre Car park rooftop, Biosecurity at Renowned Street, Government Shipping Services at Walu Bay and Lami Town.
