The time is now ticking for the Fiji Airways Men’s National 7s team to address major weaknesses in discipline and defence before the Tokyo Olympics in July.
The 2016 Olympic Games gold medalists have struggled to maintain their consistent form this season and have only managed to win one tournament in the World Rugby 7s Series calendar – the Sydney 7s.
According to statistics provided by World Rugby, the Gareth Baber coached side has received 24 yellow cards this year which is the highest by any team.
Four yellow cards alone was collected by the national side in the Vancouver 7s.
The highest number of yellow cards collected in a tournament by the Fiji Men’s 7s team is 6 which was in the Dubai and Cape Town 7s tournaments.
Another critical area of concern is defence.
World Rugby statistics states that Fiji misses an average of seven tackles per match.
This is based on data gathered throughout the season so far.
Next up on the HSBC World 7s Series are the London and Paris 7s tournaments in May.
The pools for the London 7s have not been released.
