There are a lot of rape cases and sexual violence, and there has never been a need by any government to set up a specialised court for sexual victims but the previous government had brought in a corruption court.
Acting Director of Public Prosecutions, Ratu David Toganivalu made these comments after the consultation on the review of the establishment of the Anti-Corruption Division of the Magistrates Court and the High Court.
Toganivalu says this was why FICAC had to be there today to justify whether it is working or not and whether to amend the law as proposed.
Toganivalu says they also needed the statistics with them today to try and see whether these corruption courts are value adding, have they been successful or have they met the needs for why they were made.
He also says since FICAC did not show up today and they do not have the statistics, they cannot really put a definite answer on whether it is actually working or not. The Acting DPP further says he thinks the amendment that is being proposed is to remove the corruption courts from the court system and for them to operate just like any other court.
