Minister for Home Affairs, Pio Tikoduadua says he has been advised by Police that the break-ins in five temples and a mosque in the West do not appear to be motivated by religious ill-will or antagonism.
While speaking during a press conference, Tikoduadua says they are simple, opportunistic attempts to steal money from places that the burglars believe are less secure than homes and businesses.
He has assured everyone that the Government takes these matters seriously, and they will investigate and prosecute offenders to the full extent of the law.
Tikoduadua adds the Police have met with officials of the affected religious organisations to see how they can take common-sense measures to avoid repeats of these break-ins.
The Minister wants to assure everyone in Fiji that these incidents have his personal attention.
He has asked the Police to do everything they can to ensure that they are not repeated.
Tikoduadua says he is well aware of the sensitivity of break-ins at places of worship.
He adds whatever the motivation for these break-ins, these events are deeply hurtful to the people who worship there.
However, the Minister wants to also ask all our leaders to ensure that these incidents are not sensationalized, or used for political rhetoric or to cause alarm between religious communities.
