Swimming and athletics to have wild card entries for the Olympics while other sports have to qualify - FASANOC

FASANOC has today confirmed that only swimming and athletics will have universality (wild card) places at this year’s Tokyo Olympics while all others will have to qualify.

Team Fiji’s Chef De Mission Patrick Bower says they have two spots for swimming and one spot for athletics.

He says the two highest-ranked swimmers in the male and female category will take up those spots while in athletics, the highest-ranked athlete will take up the lone spot.

Bower says Robert Elder and George Fong are fighting to qualify for archery.

In Judo, Tevita Takayawa is currently training in the United Kingdom and will compete in the UK Grand Prix from the 6th to the 8th of March.

In Karate, Tevita Tamanigaunatawamudu who is eyeing qualification to the Olympics will compete in the League Competition in Austria next month.

Bower says Winston Hill and Jone Davule are heading to Jordan to compete in the Asian Oceania Tokyo 2020 boxing qualifying event.

He says there are a number of swimmers who are vying for the two places in swimming.

Bower says Moana Wind is in Dunedin, New Zealand at the moment for the New Zealand Open Championships while the others are training overseas.

In Table Tennis, Sally Yee will compete in the Oceania Singles and Mixed Doubles which are qualifying events for the Olympics.

Meanwhile, the Fiji Airways Men’s and Women’s 7s teams have already qualified for the Tokoyo Olympics.
