NSW Waratahs coach Rob Penney believes that his side is in a better place than last year despite the exit of some of their experienced players from the club.

The club was hit hard after the 2019 Rugby World Cup, with Wallabies Tolu Latu, Bernard Foley and Sekope Kepu heading overseas.

Waratahs back-rower, Jack Dempsey is the latest to confirm his departure, leaving for Glasgow at the end of the season.

With Wallabies captain Michael Hooper taking a sabbatical rest in the first six months of the year, the Waratahs enter the season as the least experienced Super Rugby side.

Penny says they are confident with the players they currently have and most of them are young players trying to make their mark on the international field.

He adds they have trained them well.

Super Rugby Australia kicks off this Friday with the Waratahs taking on the Reds in the opening match at 8.45pm and the Western Force will face the Brumbies at 10.55pm.
