A single mother who lost her only source of income after the Suva Flea Market fire has been provided a timely assistance after she was given a new sewing machine by the Indian High Commission.

After hearing about the woman’s struggles on Fijivillage, the Indian High Commission stepped in to provide her with the necessary assistance.

Tailasa Rureni who was a tailor at the market says she lost her three machines and all sewing materials in the fire and she is finding it very hard to survive.

A relieved Rureni says she is thankful to the Indian High Commission for coming to her aid when she thought all hope was lost.

She says she will use the machine to start off her business from home and provide for her family.

Rureni had earlier told us that being a single mother and having to provide for her 1-year old son and her mother, her sewing business was her only source of income.

She said times were already hard before the fire due to the COVID-19 pandemic but now it is difficult to even put food on the table on some days.
