If you mistreat and lose the trust of those you serve – do not expect a lot in return because people will only support you if they trust you.

That was the very blunt and clear message by the Minister for Defence and National Security Inia Seruiratu at the Fiji Police Force Community Policing Symposium underway at the Pearl Resort in Pacific Harbour.

He says while Police cannot demand members of the public to get involved in crime prevention initiatives, they can, however, win their support through simple acts of kindness, respect, empathy and humility.

Seruiratu says Fijians have and continue to show that they are willing to help if it’s for a worthy cause.

He says this is why it is important to get the small things right and every police officer needs to be reminded that they are no different from those they serve.

The Minister says community policing is all about give and take – but it’s more than 99% giving in as far as the Police is concerned.

Seruiratu has commended the Acting Commissioner for dedicating the first three months of 2021 towards strengthening customer service.

The Fiji Police Force Community Policing Symposium will end tomorrow.
