Serbian president labels shooting and fire outside parliament building a 'terrorist act'
Source : abc.net.au

One person has been detained and at least one person injured after a shooting and a fire broke out outside of Serbia's parliament building in Belgrade.

A video posted on the NOVA media outlet, the location of which was confirmed by Reuters, showed armed security officers approaching a large tent outside parliament on Wednesday.

Several shots were fired and then a fire broke out inside the tent, which was one of several erected this year by supporters of Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić during anti-government protests.

President Vučić described the shooting as a terrorist act and told a government event that he was addressing that he had to leave early to address the incident.

Huge street protests have been going on for a year against Mr Vučić, triggered by the collapse of a train station awning in the city of Novi Sad last November that killed 16 people and that many blame on government neglect and corruption.

The shooting took place in a park between the parliament and Mr Vučić's office where his supporters have erected tents to block the protesters from approaching the buildings. No protest was going on at the time.

It was not clear who fired the shots or how the fire started.

Local police declined to comment.
