Following serious concerns raised regarding blocked drains causing flooding in the greater Suva area, Minister for Public Works, Ro Filipe Tuisawau says they are liaising closely with the Suva City Council on this.
While responding to questions by fijivillage News, Ro Filipe says there are some issues regarding responsibilities but he needs to get an update from the Chairman of the Fiji Roads Authority.
He says he has requested the FRA to look into this with the town councils and they need to alleviate it in terms of reallocation of resources and prioritizing it.
Recent bouts of heavy rain had resulted in surface flooding at Karsanji and Grantham Road in Raiwaqa, parts of Suva City and Samabula.
Drivers say flooding on roads can lead to accidents and also damage cars.
They say the drains must be cleared by the FRA to ensure the safety of people using the roads.
A resident of Wailea Settlement in Vatuwaqa whose home got flooded about two weeks ago says blocked drains during high tide caused the flooding.
She says most of her belongings got wet due to the flooding.
Meanwhile, questions sent to the Fiji Roads Authority and the Suva City Council remain unanswered.
