Principal Officer of the iTaukei Institute of Language and Culture Simione Sevudredre has revealed that one reason why crimes and uprising are increasing in the iTaukei community is because the values in the mother language are ignored.
He says when people compare the iTaukei language and the English language on a world scale, around 370 million people worldwide speak in English but there are only 0.406 percent of the total population speak in iTaukei.
Sevudredre says celebrating International Mother Language Day is important as it not only shows an individual his or her identity but it teaches values.
He says the knowledge in our mother language is very crucial in conserving the environment particularly in today’s age of climate change.
He adds our mother language has old wisdom in them that teaches an individual a lot of lessons about how people should behave and live their life.
