Remain indoors during rain showers as there is a possibility of acidic rainfall

Please remain indoors during rain showers and cover rain water storage tanks as the Department of Environment says there is a possibility of slightly acidic rainfall in Fiji.

This is due to increased sulfur dioxide concentrations stemming from the recent volcanic eruption in Tonga.

The Department of Environment adds Fiji’s air remains safe to breathe as the sulfur dioxide concentrations in the atmosphere are at high altitude.

We have asked the Department for the time-frame for the acidic rainfall, whether the Water Authority of Fiji has been notified as their catchments will also be impacted and what action if any have to be taken to ensure tap water is safe to consume.

Fijivillage has also asked what this means to Fijians who depend on rain water for drinking, cooking and washing. They will respond later.
