Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka says he is encouraging his cabinet ministers to avoid wearing kalavata (matching traditional outfits) at various events while people are suffering from poverty.

Rabuka made this statement while officiating at the 2023 Sports Awards that was held at the FMF Gymnasium.

He did not wear the Sports Awards kalavata.

He shared that during his visit to Tonga, he noticed that many people couldn't afford to change their clothes throughout the year.

He recalled being given six shirts as part of his kalavata for the week, but while walking the streets of Tonga, he saw some people struggling and noticed that many cars were still old and worn out.

We are currently trying to confirm the cost of the kalavata.
