Public warned to avoid reef fish due to fish poisoning

Following the death of a couple in Namunamu Settlement in Mataso, Ra in a suspected case of food poisoning, the Ministry of Fisheries is reminding the public that fish poisoning is a serious health risk, particularly from puffer fish and their eggs.

They say puffer fish contain a deadly toxin called tetrodotoxin.

The Ministry of Fisheries is highlightling fish that are poisonous such as Ogo,Damu ni veitiri, Daniva, Sumusumu, Kake, Donu and Dabea.

The Ministry is also reminding the public not to eat puffer fish eggs or organs, as they can cause paralysis and even death.

They add that cooking, boiling or freezing does not destroy the toxin, and people should avoid eating reef fish if they are unsure about its safety.
