University of Fiji Vice Chancellor, Professor Shaista Shameem has been appointed as the Chair of the Human Rights Sub-committee of the new Commission of Small Island States on Climate Change and International Law.
In a statement, the University says the new Commission which formed during COP26, was registered with the United Nations and creates the possibility of claiming damages from major polluting countries through judicial means such as the UN's International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea.
The Committee members will be responsible for different areas of work through sub-committees for Loss and Damages, Marine Environment and Sea-Level Rise.
Professor Shameem says she is honoured to be requested to serve on the Committee of Legal Experts assisting the Commission.
Uni Fiji adds Professor Shameem’s appointment allows the University to participate internationally in resolving the most significant issue of the century, namely climate change.
