Police are urging parents and guardians to be vigilant and aware of their children’s safety during the school break following the deaths of two children who drowned last week.

They say children should never be in the care of another child, never be allowed to go swimming on their own or with other children and if living in an area surrounded by water, whether it be the sea, river or creek, parents need to be extra vigilant of their children's activities at all times.

Police say accidents can occur at any time therefore children’s safety should be prioritised.

In the incidents that occurred last week, the body of a one-year-old boy was discovered floating at the Navosai Creek on Saturday afternoon while a 12-year-old boy drowned on Wednesday afternoon in the Wainibuka River.
