Police to step up surprise patrols in Laqere hot spots

Police will increase unpredictable patrols in known hot spots following serious concerns raised by a Laqere resident about youths openly using drugs and gambling in the area.

The resident told fijivillage News that the illegal activities are happening in broad daylight, and when his elderly parents report them, their home is stoned in retaliation.

He says suspects only scatter when police are present and resume their activities once officers leave.

He is calling on authorities to conduct more regular and unannounced patrols without waiting for complaints from the public.

In response, Acting Director of Operations, Senior Superintendent of Police Wate Vocevoce, confirms that patrols in areas like Laqere are already taking place and are based on crime trends and community feedback.

SSP Vocevoce says police are reviewing their schedules to ensure a stronger, less predictable presence in these hot spots.

He reassured residents that police continue to investigate drug and illegal gambling reports and are running regular awareness campaigns in schools, communities, and churches.

Police are also working closely with Crime Prevention Committees and stakeholders to reduce criminal activity and build safer communities.

SSP Vocevoce is urging residents to keep reporting suspicious activity, saying community cooperation is key to maintaining peace and safety.
