Police investigating 9 cases related to COI report, 1 file submitted to the DPP’s Office

Police are currently investigating nine cases related to the recent Commission of Inquiry report into the appointment of Barbara Malimali as FICAC Commissioner.

Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu says the Criminal Investigations Department was already carrying out investigations before the report was released.

He says following a referral from the President, three new investigations into allegations of abuse of office have been launched.

Tudravu says that an investigation began after a complaint from former Acting Deputy Commissioner of FICAC, Francis Puleiwai.

He says the complaint involves alleged obstruction, abuse of office, and perverting the course of justice connected to the arrest of the suspended FICAC Commissioner.

The Police Commissioner says that out of the nine cases, one file has been sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions for legal advice, three more files are ready for submission to the DPP's office, while five are still under investigation.

He says these investigations are a top priority and that independent legal advice will be sought for all cases.

He adds that further updates will be provided as investigations continue.

Meanwhile Prime Minister, Sitiveni Rabuka confirms that the monitoring of the actions taken after the Commission of Inquiry report are being done and he is meeting the President on a weekly basis.
