Barbara Malimali

Police are currently investigating 5 cases with relation to the Commission of Inquiry into the appointment of Barbara Malimali as FICAC Commissioner while 6 are pending legal advice from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions and one case has been filed.

Police say a number of these reports were lodged prior to the conduct of the COI.

They say the case that has been filed relates to a complaint lodged in 2024 against the former FICAC Commissioner for allegedly disseminating confidential information from the National Voter Registration.

Police say the investigation file was returned from the ODPP and closed as there was insufficient evidence to proceed.

They say the 6 files awaiting independent legal advice from the DPP’s office, include 2 reports lodged in 2024 while the remaining 4 are reports lodged this year, of allegations of abuse of office, obstruction and perverting the course of justice.

Police also confirm that of the 5 cases still under investigation, 3 were lodged following the COI proceedings which includes the latest, lodged against a senior official of the COI.

They had earlier indicated that COI Chair, Justice David Ashton-Lewis, was under investigation for allegations of falsifying documents.

They add that as these are cases of national interest, the CID team is working to ensure investigations are conducted thoroughly before the files are sent to the DPP’s office.
