Get Safe Online Fiji Ambassador, Tajeswari Devi says phishing is the common online payment scam in Fiji.
Phising is the fraudulent practice of sending emails purporting to be from reputable companies in order to induce individuals to reveal personal information, such as passwords and credit card numbers.
Devi highlighted this during the Safe Online Payments Webinar today which was moderated by the Commissioner of the Online Safety Commission, Anne Dunn-Baleilevuka.
She says they have been receiving a lot of emails stating that someone is pretending to be someone else with an aim to get personal information about credit card details, IDs and passports.
Devi says the risk of online fraud increases when people lose their credit cards.
When questioned how can someone know if they are making a reliable payment, Digicel Head of Legal Affairs Peter Rigamoto says people will have to use their common sense and web sense.
Rigamoto says people need to ask questions before making payments.
