People of Savusavu joins National Coconut Day celebration

The people of Savusavu joined in celebrating National Coconut Day as Minister for iTaukei Affairs, Culture, Heritage and Arts, Ifereimi Vasu, reaffirmed the coconut tree’s vital role as Fiji’s Tree of Life which is a symbol of cultural heritage and a key driver of the nation’s economy.

While speaking at the event, Vasu says the coconut industry remains a key pillar of Fiji’s economy, employing thousands of people, from smallholder farmers to workers in processing and manufacturing.

He says in 2024, Fiji exported a significant volume of coconut products, including virgin coconut oil, copra, desiccated coconut, coconut milk and shell-based handicrafts, all of which contributed significantly to export revenue and connected Fiji to global markets.

Vasu stressed the need to invest in research, innovation and sustainable agricultural practices to strengthen the industry and ensure its future growth.

He pleads for greater support for smallholder farmers and the adoption of modern farming techniques.

He urged all stakeholders to work together to preserve and grow the coconut industry for future generations.

This year’s theme is “Nurturing Communities, Growing Futures, One Seed at a Time,” which reflects the industry’s contribution to food security, livelihoods, and cultural identity.
