If anyone is found unlawfully burning rubbish in their compound without proper approval, they can be fined up to $10,000 under the Environment Act.
This is the warning from the National Fire Authority, which has expressed its concern about the rising number of structural fires across Fiji, which pose a serious threat to people's lives.
NFA says there have already been six fires, including three that occurred just yesterday, while the cause of the fires and total damage costs are still under investigation.
They say the NFA has received multiple complaints from the public regarding uncontrolled burning by neighbours, which has been particularly dangerous during the current hot and dry season.
They add that this weather increases the volatility of fuel loads and lowers the ignition point, making it easier for fires to ignite, even at low temperatures.
They are urging residents to secure their properties before leaving, even for a short period, to prevent the risk of fire.
