Minister for Economy Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum says guardians who wish to apply for the $180 Inflation Mitigation Package for students will be declined at this point in time, because it could lead to instances of abuse.

The Minister says someone may say they are a guardian to a child and parents may also apply for the same, thus, they are ensuring priority is given to parents.

Sayed-Khaiyum adds with the new assistance, collective income below $50,000 are eligible and can be verified in many ways, such as the Turaga Ni Koro, Advisory Councillors and school heads.

He also says a Legal Aid staff turned away a parent who was there to collect a form and was advised it is only for children who are in school.

He adds when the matter was brought to his attention, a team from the Ministry Economy with the Director Legal Aid managed to address the issue and solve the problem.
