People the practice their mother tongue should begin from home with parents teaching their children their own language.
This has been highlighted by Minister for iTaukei Affairs Ifereimi Vasu while speaking during the International Mother Language Day celebration at the Saint Steven Building where more than a 100 people took part in.
Vasu says our children should be taught in our language with the explanation of how important it is to be conserved and spoken daily so that it does not stop to exist.
Vasu says this great responsibility requires support from parents, families, tribes, churches, schools and social relationships.
He says the majority have used English as a medium of communication at home and tend to not speak their mother tongue.
He is urging everyone to maintain the dialects of every province and also the standard Fijian language which is the Bau dialect.
