Minister for Education Rosy Akbar has stressed that parents must never shift the role of teaching values to children to the teachers.
While speaking at the unveiling of the Swami Vivekananda statue at the cultural centre at Butt Street in Suva, Akbar has questioned the parents on why there is a sudden need to teach values to children.
She says we need to move away from the social imbalances that have been created and there are different reasons for that.
Akbar says the education system is capable of instilling these values to the students but only with the support of the parents.
She says our teachers have a very important role to play and they are expected to step in if parents are failing in their responsibilities.
Akbar also highlighted that during the COVID-19 school break a number of parents were contacting them on when school will resume and initially they thought that parents were worried about their child's education.
However she says they later came to find out that parents were in fact tired of their children being at home for so long.
