In a bid to tackle the problem of soft plastic waste in the country, the Pacific Recycling Foundation, in partnership with the Australian, New Zealand, and Pacific Islands Plastics Pact is collaborating to revolutionize the way soft plastics are managed.

PRF Founder, Amitesh Deo says the launch of the Circular Pacific Plastic Project at Extra Supermarket in Lautoka marks a initiative aimed at addressing this pressing challenge as they continue to build on their proven track record of transformative and impactful recycling programs.

He says they are offering sustainable solutions to a problem that has long been overlooked.

Deo says PRF in partnership with ANZPAC and WRAP with funding from the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office , is introducing an innovative dual-system approach that engages both businesses and consumers.

He says with plans to establish a local up-cycling facility, the initiative also aims to reduce dependency on imports, create economic opportunities within Fiji, and generate new job opportunities, particularly for the collection pillars of recycling, who will progressively transition into green jobs.

Deo says the Circular Pacific Plastic Project is designed to serve as a blueprint for other Pacific Island nations, showcasing how locally tailored, sustainable recycling initiatives can address shared challenges.

The Chief Marketing Officer at Extra Supermarket, Lailanie Burnes says at Extra Supermarket, they are committed to playing an active role in building a more sustainable future.

Burnes says the Circular Pacific Plastic Project aligns perfectly with our values of responsibility and community engagement by providing accessible recycling points for our customers, we empower individuals to make a tangible impact on reducing plastic waste.
