The LGBTQI+ community in Fiji remains significantly vulnerable and marginalised while within the political sphere, they are often segregated, with a lack of genuine representation compared to progressive countries.
Pacific Recycling Foundation Founder Amitesh Deo stressed this as people are celebrating Pride Month.
He says that the absence of meaningful LGBTQI+ representation in political decision-making not only undermines their visibility but also perpetuates the cycle of discrimination and exclusion.
The Founder says it prevents the development of policies that address their specific needs and challenges, further entrenching inequality and hindering societal acceptance.
He says lack of support is affecting everything from mental health to economic opportunities for LGBTQI+ individuals.
Deo calls on political leaders to move beyond their self-serving agendas and take decisive action to include and support the communities genuinely.
Deo says by fostering a truly inclusive and equitable environment, we can begin to dismantle the barriers that hold back so many talented and resilient individuals.
He also stressed the urgency of addressing these pressing issues.
He says their Mapping Exercise has uncovered the reluctance of LGBTQI+ members to openly identify themselves due to pervasive stigma, this stigma not only undermines their dignity but also hinders their collective progress in recycling efforts.
