Vice President of World Bank for East Asia and the Pacific, Manuela Ferro

The World Bank’s main focus is to reduce poverty in Fiji and help people live on a liveable planet.

This was highlighted by the Vice President of World Bank for East Asia and the Pacific Manuela Ferro at a press conference this afternoon at the Grand Pacific Hotel.

She says Fiji is a country where they have a very strong engagement that will really benefit the people and they are the second largest internal lender to the economy.

Ferro says she had very productive meetings with the Government and they have been able to sign a new agreement to finance investments to develop additional resources for tourism, agriculture and integrated development.

The Vice President adds this agreement was very much supported by the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Tourism.

She says that she also had the opportunity to visit a couple of their projects in the health sector, where they were able to inaugurate and put into motion some new equipment that will help test for several diseases.

The Vice President also visited the Raiwaqa Health Centre, which provides services to a large number of people in the Central Division.

She says these are the kind of things that they at the World Bank are really keen on supporting in Fiji.

Ferro says they are keen on supporting things that will translate into an improvement in the lives of the people, and they spend much of their time thinking of the poorest among the Fijian population.
