Our figures contradict the Americans and we are working with them to detect human trafficking in Fiji – ACP Waqa

To date, our figures contradict with the one given by the reports by the Americans and we are working with them to detect human trafficking in Fiji.

Those are the comments of Assistant Commissioner of Police, Mesake Waqa during the Fiji Law Society Convention and the 2nd Pasefika Lawyers Collective Conference, held under the theme “Embracing Change: The Future of Law in the Pacific,” at the Crowne Plaza in Nadi.

He says they are doing their intelligence work in this area.

ACP Waqa also says human trafficking was something new about 20 years ago in Fiji.

He says through the international observers, they have detected that there is human trafficking in Fiji.

The Assistant Commissioner says in the domestic setting, they have detected that there is human trafficking in Fiji where it is being organised by some groups.

On domestic trafficking, he confirms they have investigated and handed cases to the DPP for prosecution whereby the exploitation was on sexual servitude and prostitution purposes.

ACP Waqa says more work continues on this.
