Sadly, our education curriculum is silent about our own stories.
That’s the comment of Sau Vaka Culture Consultancy Founder, Simione Sevudredre during a panel discussion on "Roots of Resilience - Traditional Knowledge for a Changing Climate" organised by the German Embassy at the Forum Secretariat today.
Sevudredre says we learn about everyone else’s stories, their history, their geography, even their language, we have nothing, ever since we were ceded to Great Britain in 1874.
He stresses there is a gap in our education curriculum, it has its priorities, but culture is never, ever a priority for us.
The Sau Vaka Founder says if the people are silent in the villages, at least there could be attempts to un-silence our voices in the education curriculum.
He says we can do this by bringing back the stories, bringing back the way we understand things, and the way we do things.
Sevudredre says it's because we are marine and environmental people, our words attest to that, and our farming techniques attest to that.
