Online Safety Commission to investigate online abuse against Prof. Shameem
Fiji Vice Chancellor, Professor Shaista Shameem

The Online Safety Commission has accepted the University of Fiji Vice Chancellor, Professor Shaista Shameem complaint of online abuse and has given it's assurance to the University that they will fully investigate.

Professor Shameem says that she has requested the Commission to also consider whether the objectionable email containing false information and racist remarks targeting her and the University, that was sent to 184 email addresses and many Instagram handles at the weekend constituted cyber bullying.

She says this is apart from breaching the Online Safety Act, the False Information Act and the absolute liability provisions of the Crimes Act.

Professor Shameem says that since so many well-known people and organizations were sent the original objectionable email by an employee of another institution, and did not disassociate from it, she wants all those in the email list investigated as well.

She says such massive group harassment was unacceptable and she is determined to have every single one of them investigated.

The Vice Chancellor further says it is fortunate that she is a lawyer with vast experience of the law and what was acceptable conduct.

Professor Shameem adds that neither the University nor she deserved such abusive treatment.
