Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka says the no repeat system introduced by the FijiFirst government for students to proceed to the upper class even if they failed exams, is a waste of money.
Rabuka says they, as Government will revisit this.
He says education is a right but getting a degree should not be a right.
He says continuing into the next class even when you failed exams is a waste of money because the student should be led into a different path to become a good tradesman instead of just continuing into a profession with poor grades.
The Prime Minister says he has noticed that Year 8 and senior form exam results need to improve and from those results, stakeholders including employers, the Ministry of Education, tertiary institutions and teacher unions should discuss or come up with a suitable curriculum for the various students.
Rabuka says what has happened because of the current system is that people are relying on the National Employment Centre for jobs.
The Prime Minister says when students fail, they should continue education, but along a different path so they can qualify to be a good tradesman otherwise they will continue to have poor grades.
Rabuka says in his generation, they became successful because they had to go into streams that qualified them for the grades they achieved.
He says when they got low grades or failed, they were disqualified from going on and on to the next class.
