There were no injuries or fatalities reported in the ferris wheel accident at the Wairiki 7s in Taveuni.

The National Occupational Health and Safety Service of the Employment Ministry says a thorough investigation is underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident based on the evidence provided.

They say the accident occurred at around 4pm Wednesday when the ride experienced malfunctions.

The Ministry say patrons had to be assisted in disembarking from their seats by operators and some bystanders.

The Ministry also highlighted that the amusement rides had been inspected by the National OHS Inspectorate on December 7th and 9th, 2024.

They say these inspections included relevant examinations and tests to ensure that all components were in proper working condition.

The Ministry say they have issued a prohibition notice halting the operation of all rides.

The Ministry of Employment say that Minister for Employment Agni Deo Singh, following exhaustive discussions with senior ministry staff has decided to impose a ban on all ferris wheels until further notice.

Singh adds the report on last year’s fatal incident at the Showcase was submitted to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions in December 2023, as has been stated on numerous occasions in the past.
