The National Training and Productivity Centre has started work to identify skills gaps and productivity related concerns in the Fijian workforce.
Director, Dr Isimeli Tagicakiverata says they will be talking to employers and employees and ascertain upskilling and reskilling gaps that can be facilitated through short courses and programs.
He says business models have slightly changed in the new normal and there is an urgency for reskilling and upskilling of employees to ensure they can keep up with the new trends and ways of doing work.
Tagicakiverata says due to the impacts of COVID-19, employees in some industries have left for other opportunities and there are gaps to fill.
Tagicakiverata says we need to encourage the young generation to take up training offered by the Government where it has provided a $1 million grant to FNU to re-skill individuals who have lost their jobs since the start of the pandemic.
Government had also announced 5,000 spaces in the 2021-2022 National Budget for TVET at FNU under the Tertiary Scholarships and Loans Service.
