Good news for more 10,000 subsistence farmers and fishermen in the Northern Division as the United Nations Central Emergency Relief Fund has provided $1 million in assistance to the most vulnerable communities in TC Yasa affected areas in support of food security.
While speaking in Votua Village in Lekutu, Bua, Minister for Agriculture, Dr. Mahendra Reddy says they will provide assistance to 3,400 farmers, 400 primary sector engaged families, about 1,200 people engaged in the fisheries sector and 2,200 people engaged in agriculture.
He says each family in the fisheries sector will get a basic package that will assist them to engage in additional fishing to support their families as well as to create a surplus.
People involved in agriculture will get a rehabilitation package that will include basic equipment, farm equipment and seed package.
He says the good thing about this package is that they are not only assisting farmers but also fishermen.
He says households who have people living with disabilities will also get a special package.
Over 1,000 families who are headed by females will also be assisted through a package.
UN Resident Coordinator, Sanaka Samarasinha was also at the event in Bua today.
