The Ministry of Youth is prioritising the implementation of programs across all youth groups to help prevent young people from falling under the influence of drugs, which is a growing concern in Fiji.
Minister for Youth and Sports Jese Saukuru made this statement while launching the two-day Yasayasa Moala Youth Festival in Yaroi Village, Matuku.
Saukuru reminded the youth of the call made by Ratu Meli Saubulinayau, the Chairman of the Lau Provincial Committee, during their recent Provincial Council meeting in Suva where he urged unemployed youths from Lau to return to their villages rather than wasting time in the city.
Saukuru echoed this sentiment, warning them that it would be a grave tragedy to witness the extinction of a Fijian village due to drug abuse.
He also expressed concern about the nation’s rising HIV/AIDS cases, which are partly linked to drug use, advising the youth of Yasayasa Moala to make wise decisions and avoid being drawn into substance abuse.
As part of the Ministry's efforts, Saukuru highlighted the reintroduction of cooperative business programs that are aimed at helping youth clubs manage their financial burdens.
The Youth Festival in Lau is the fourth of its kind organised by the Ministry of Youth this year, all aimed at benefiting the nation's young people.
