Following concerns raised by Suva and Nausori Taxi Associations on having to continue to pay taxi base fees despite there being an open rank system, Minister for Transport Ro Filipe Tuisawau says he will be requesting the Ministry of Local Government for town and city councils to hold on as they are currently reviewing the regulatory framework for base fees.

Suva and Nausori Taxi Associations are calling on the government to reinstate the taxi base system and say they are ready to pay base fees as taxi drivers are operating from anywhere they prefer.

The Associations say a base system will have taxis operating from allocated base and public will have a better service from legal taxis operators.

While responding to questions by fijivillage News, Ro Filipe says they are currently reviewing the regulatory framework for base fees and are closely working with the Office of the Attorney General.

Ro Filipe says they continue to have consultations with the Taxi Association and stakeholders who get permits to operate.
