Minister for Lands refutes claims about Namosi Mining Developments
Minister for Lands and Mineral Resources, Filimoni Vosarogo

Minister for Lands and Mineral Resources, Filimoni Vosarogo, has refuted claims made by Fiji Times suggesting that the people of Namosi will reject any mining developments on their land, regardless of whether the Mining Act is reviewed.

While responding to the statements by Sipiriano Nariva, Chairman of the Lomani Au Maroroi Organisation, Vosarogo dismissed allegations that he has failed to meet with landowners as promised.

The Minister criticised the newspaper for lacking an understanding of Vanua protocols and the significant role of the Tui Namosi in governing Namosi matters.

Vosarogo clarified that he has already met with the Mataqali Nabukebuke at the Namosi Provincial Council Office and reviewed their letters of objection.

He stated that no timeline was set for a second meeting with the Mataqali due to the sensitivity of the issues raised.

The Minister of Lands emphasised that he recently met with the Tui Namosi, Ratu Suliano Matanitobua to discuss the Special Prospecting License and other national matters.

He added that the Tui Namosi plays a central role in decision-making for Namosi matters and stressed the importance of respecting Vanua protocols.

Vosarogo says the government is providing opportunities for dialogue with landowners, unlike previous administrations.

He adds that discussions with the Mataqali Nabukebuke will resume following further consultations with the Tui Namosi.
