A man who raped his cousin in 2020 in Suva has been given a 8 year prison term by High Court Judge, Justice Daniel Goundar.
While sentencing the man, Justice Goundar says the victim used to stay at the man’s house and studied at USP.
Justice Goundar further says the man breached her trust and she was sexually violated in her home, a place where she should have felt safe.
The Judge adds there was some form of planning on the man’s part.
Justice Goundar further says in her impact statement, the victim has said that after incident she is staying on her own, she feels socially withdrawn and some of her family members are not speaking with her.
A non-parole period of 5 years has been set.
