A 60-year-old man who raped and sexually assaulted his 17-year-old stepdaughter in Rakiraki has been sentenced to 17 years and 9 months imprisonment by Lautoka High Court Judge, Justice Sunil Sharma.
The incidents happened in 2016 and 2017.
While sentencing the man, Justice Sharma says as a result of the actions of the man, the girl was unable to finish her high school studies.
Justice Sharma says the man committed serious offences against his stepdaughter who he was supposed to protect.
The Judge adds there was some degree of planning by the man as he knew the girl’s mother was at work and he had sent two siblings of the girl to get water from the village so he could be alone with the girl.
It was also heard in court that after the incidents were reported, the man’s family started disliking the girl and she does not feel safe at home and has lost trust in everyone.
A non-parole period of 15 years has been set.
