The Malaysian community in Fiji came together in numbers to celebrate National Sports Day at the Yat Sen Secondary School Hall with sporting activities that were enjoyed by the participants.
The group started with a Zumba session and then had some badminton matches to get the participants going.
Speaking at the celebration, the High Commissioner of Malaysia to Fiji, Nor’ Azam Mohd Idrus, said the High Commission always strives to make Malaysians feel at home, even when they are far from Malaysian soil.
He says these gatherings bring a sense of home, and he is aware for many of them, wherever life takes them, Malaysia will always be home. Nor' Azam says Fiji and Malaysia share a strong sporting culture.
He adds that he was inspired by a speech given recently by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka in which he stated that his government’s ambition is to make Fiji a beacon for sporting excellence.
The High Commissioner says Malaysia shares that same aspiration and aims to make their country a leader in sports too.
He says beyond physical fitness, this event also serves a larger purpose as it fosters people-to-people connections, bringing together Malaysians and friends of Malaysia across all ages and backgrounds.
