Madigibuli’s trial date vacated after request to represent himself

Madigibuli’s trial date vacated after request to represent himself

The murder trial of Apisai Madigibuli, accused of killing his 25-year-old wife last year has been vacated after he informed the court of his intention to represent himself.

The trial was scheduled to begin today.

When questioned by Suva High Court Judge Justice Dane Tuiqereqere, Madigibuli says it’s his case and he wants to represent himself.

Justice Tuiqereqere reminded him that without legal training, he would not know how to examine witnesses or make proper submissions, which will be a major disadvantage to his defence.

Justice Tuiqereqere has not yet allowed Legal Aid to withdraw as he wants Madigibuli to maintain some legal support during the proceedings.

State Counsel Monisha Naidu says she has no issues with the adjournment.

Legal Aid has handed over all the disclosures to Madigibuli.

The trial is now set from April 6th to 17th, 2026.

The case has been adjourned to August 14th.

Madigibuli is charged with one count of murder.

It is alleged that he killed his wife at an apartment complex along Robertson Road in Suva in April last year.
