The students of Assemblies of God and Dr. Ram Lakhan Memorial Primary School in Tacirua have been reminded of the importance of understanding who they are and their roles in the community or village.
While speaking at the Central Division Drug-Free Awareness Campaign, Drug Free World founder, Kalesi Volatabu says children are more likely to stay away from drugs when they understand their roles within their community.
Volatabu says the loss of identity has disrupted the structure of traditional values, paving the way for the adoption of Western culture.
She says as iTaukei, there is a structured process in place within villages, yet many people choose to ignore it and instead engage in harmful activities like drug use and other illegal behaviours.
Volatabu also highlighted that at the Saint Giles Hospital, about 70 to 80 percent of patients admitted are iTaukei.
She adds that the iTaukei needs to be innovative and seek advice on how they can avoid drugs and find alternative ways to achieve success and earn a living.
Volatabu adds parents play a crucial role as role models for their children.
She adds children’s behaviour outside the home reflects the values and behaviour of their parents.
