The Liverpool forward Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva have died following an accident in the Spanish province of Zamora last night.
28-year-old Silva was also a professional footballer, with Portuguese second-tier club Penafiel.
Jota had undergone a minor surgery and doctors advised him against flying. As a result, he was planning to return to Liverpool for the start of pre-season.
It is said that their Lamborghini, left the road due to a tyre blowout while overtaking another vehicle and then caught fire.
Jota married his long-term partner Rute Cardoso, with whom he had three children, just last month.
Liverpool says they are devastated at the loss of Jota who joined the club in 2020.
He scored 65 goals in 182 appearances for the Reds, helping them win the FA Cup and League Cup in 2022 and the Premier League title last season.
The Football Federation has requested that European football's governing body UEFA observe a minute's silence before Portugal's Women's Euros game against Spain today.
Meanwhile, Portugal's Prime Minister Luis Montenegro has extended his deepest condolences to their family.
He says it is a sad day for football and for national and international sports.
