Market vendors in Levuka can now look forward to selling their produce and catch in a much more appropriate and safer place as the Levuka Town Council and UN Women are working together to build a new market.
While speaking at the Levuka Town Hall, the Minister for Local Government Premila Kumar says that at the moment women are using tents along the foreshore area.
She says there is a very urgent need to put that market together so that all these vendors can move into the market which is much safer and secure for them.
Kumar says the market will also have an accommodation area as well as a cafeteria as most women come from Motoriki.
She says these women do not have a place to sleep and they come very early in the morning and some stay overnight.
The old market has not been used for a number of years now because of the deteriorating conditions, and the damages sustained during Tropical Cyclone Winston.
Levuka Town Council CEO, Josese Rakuita who is leading this project has also confirmed that work is expected to commence next month and completed by mid next year.
