The British Deputy High Commissioner to Fiji, Paul Welsh says leadership does not come with a step by step manual and much of it is based on experience and learning through trial and error.

He highlighted this during the conclusion of a week-long workshop where participants from 10 agencies such as the Fiji Police Force, Republic of Fiji Military Forces and Ministry of Defence, Security and Policing learnt leadership skills, the importance of self-awareness, significance of cultural differences, ethical issues and decision making.

The participants in the workshop which was funded by the UK Government were awarded qualifications by Cranfield University.

Welsh says he hopes the programme has helped participants to consider what leadership style works best for them and will use their newly acquired knowledge in support of Fiji’s interests.

The Permanent Secretary for Defence, National Security and Policing, Manasa Lesuma says the strategic leadership programme aims to develop more capable leaders with a broadened perspective and a greater understanding of strategic thinking and decision-making as well as personal insight and around their leadership style.

He says it is an opportune time for them to reflect on the type of leaders they want to be because it will determine their ability to rise above the challenges and overcome any problems.
