Minister for Local Government, Premila Kumar says they will be reviewing some of the regulations within municipal councils in order to ease the burden of rate collection.
Kumar highlighted this during her recent tour to Rakiraki Town and elaborated that there were challenges being faced by many municipalities during rate collection.
She says the laws have to be reviewed because just as the taxes are important for development, rates are equally important for municipal projects.
Kumar revealed the Rakiraki Town Council has outstanding rate arrears of $72,000 and this is a challenge being faced in most municipalities around the country.
Minister says the government has been assisting municipal councils and has provided $50,000 each for small municipal councils.
